Surreal Voyage

This exhibition of collages is an outcome of the artist’s 2014 sea voyage from Singapore to the UK via the Suez Canal. Influenced by nature/culture juxtapositions, the works have evolved from maritime and landscape watercolours completed during the voyage.

Collage source materials were collected along the way from discarded books, maps, postcards, and magazines.

Birds are both a physical presence on sea voyages and are often used as a metaphor for nature and as a source of ‘Metamorphoses’ imagery in art dating from ancient Egypt.

Mineral prospecting and global trade themes are symbolic of our old and new world and enigmatic images from artists such as Durer, De Chirico, and Max Ernst have been cut and inserted as European cultural fragments.
